A co-developer of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, Dr Treacy is one of the world's most experienced hip resurfacing surgeons and has dedicated much of his career to advancing bone-preserving hip surgery.

A Career Dedicated to Hip Resurfacing
Dr Ronan Treacy is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and specialist hip surgeon based in Birmingham, UK. For more than three decades, he has dedicated much of his career to the development and advancement of hip resurfacing and joint-preserving surgery.
He was appointed to the staff of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham in 1994, where he subsequently ran the revision hip service for almost ten years. This gave him extensive experience managing complex hip reconstruction and failed joint replacements.
During his time at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Dr Treacy worked closely with orthopaedic surgeon Derek McMinn in the development of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR). The system became one of the most widely recognised hip resurfacing implants internationally and established the Birmingham team at the forefront of modern resurfacing surgery.
Pioneering Hip Resurfacing Expertise
Hip resurfacing has remained a central focus of Dr Treacy’s clinical and academic career.
He has extensive experience treating patients with hip arthritis who may be suitable for a bone-preserving alternative to conventional total hip replacement. His experience encompasses primary hip resurfacing, complex cases and revision surgery following previous hip procedures.
Dr Treacy’s experience extends beyond the operating theatre. He has lectured, taught and performed live surgery internationally, sharing his experience of hip resurfacing and complex hip reconstruction with orthopaedic surgeons around the world. His own profile describes decades of international teaching and operative experience, including live surgery at major orthopaedic meetings.
Experience in Complex Hip and Revision Surgery
Before becoming internationally recognised for hip resurfacing, Dr Treacy developed substantial expertise in revision hip surgery, managing patients requiring complex reconstruction following previous hip replacement or resurfacing procedures.
He ran the revision hip service at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital for nearly a decade, building extensive experience in complex arthroplasty and revision procedures.

Continuing the Development of Hip Resurfacing
Dr Treacy continues to be involved in the development of hip resurfacing technology.
More recently, he has worked with JointMedica on the development of the Polymotion Hip Resurfacing system, a new generation of resurfacing technology designed to address some of the limitations associated with earlier metal-on-metal systems. He is identified as a co-inventor of the Polymotion system.
In 2025, Dr Treacy participated in procedures in Bermuda as part of the US FDA Investigational Device Exemption study for Polymotion Hip Resurfacing. His own 2025 update records four Polymotion resurfacing procedures in Bermuda as part of the trial.
Longstanding Connection with the Caribbean
Dr Treacy has been a regular visiting surgeon to Bermuda since 2002, where he has performed total hip replacement, hip resurfacing and revision hip surgery. The Bermuda OPA profile confirms this longstanding relationship.
More recent Bermuda Hospitals Board information states that he has performed hundreds of Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedures at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital over more than 25 years.
His established experience working with patients in the region provides an important foundation for his work with patients through NovoClinic in the Cayman Islands.

Dr Ronan Treacy is actively involved in the international orthopaedic community and regularly contributes to specialist meetings, educational programmes and professional forums focused on hip resurfacing and joint reconstruction. His international academic and teaching activities have included the Caribbean Orthopaedic Association, European Hip Society, Current Concepts Meetings and other specialist orthopaedic programmes.
Research
Dr Ronan Treacy has maintained a longstanding research interest in hip resurfacing, joint preservation and complex hip reconstruction. His academic work includes some of the longest-term clinical research into the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing system.
His research has examined the outcomes of hip resurfacing at five, ten and 25 years, particularly in younger and active patients. The original Birmingham Hip Resurfacing cohort has been followed for more than two decades, providing valuable long-term evidence regarding implant survival and clinical outcomes.
Dr Treacy’s research interests also extend to revision hip surgery, implant development and the evolution of resurfacing technology. More recently, he has been involved in the development and clinical evaluation of the Polymotion Hip Resurfacing system, including participation in the US FDA Investigational Device Exemption study.
His combination of long-term clinical experience, research and involvement in implant development has placed him at the forefront of the continuing evolution of hip resurfacing.
Teaching
Dr Ronan Treacy has extensive experience in postgraduate orthopaedic education and international surgical training. He previously served as Director of the West Midlands Orthopaedic Training Programme and has spent decades teaching orthopaedic surgeons in hip resurfacing and complex joint reconstruction.
His international teaching has included lectures, specialist courses, visiting professorships and live surgical demonstrations at major orthopaedic meetings. He has trained and lectured extensively on hip resurfacing, total hip replacement, revision surgery and the management of complex hip conditions.
More recently, he has continued to contribute internationally through invited lectures and educational programmes, including the Caribbean Orthopaedic Association, European Hip Society and University of Toronto Grand Rounds.
