Dr. Melissa Mascaro, M.D., is a highly trained Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist with extensive experience in both clinical practice and academic settings. She completed her fellowship training in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut, where she trained under prominent figures in sports medicine such as Dr. Thomas Trojian, Dr. Giselle Aerni, Dr. Robert Arcerio, and the late Dr. Jeff Anderson. During her fellowship, she served as a team physician, providing medical coverage for the University of Connecticut’s athletics programs, including the nationally recognized UConn Women's Basketball Team and UConn Men's Basketball Team.

About Dr. Melissa Mascaro

Dr. Mascaro’s clinical experience is broad, spanning diverse sports and events such as MMA Fighting, freestyle ski jump competitions, Ironman triathlons, and major marathons, including the Boston Marathon. She also provided coverage for the Big East Soccer Tournaments, adding to her expertise in managing injuries in various competitive sports environments.

Her medical training includes a Family Medicine residency at Hackensack Mountainside Family Medicine, where she excelled as academic chief resident. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University, where she was a Division I full-scholarship athlete and co-captain of the NCAA gymnastics team. This background gives her a unique insight into the demands placed on athletes and enhances her approach to sports medicine.

Dr. Mascaro is deeply involved in community sports medicine and has developed primary care sports medicine services locally, where she has been recognized as a “Top Doctor 2022” by NJ Monthly. Her private practice is patient-centered, offering flexible care options, including virtual visits, extended visits, and comprehensive wellness and evaluation plans tailored to athletes throughout their seasons. Her patient care philosophy focuses on helping individuals achieve competitive excellence while promoting long-term health.

Her vast team coverage experience includes affiliations with Seton Hall University Athletics, New Jersey City University, Montclair State University, and Stevens Institute of Technology, as well as public schools like Montclair, Cranford, and Nutley. She has also consulted for USA Gymnastics and provided coverage for prestigious gymnastics events such as the Kellogg’s Tour of Olympic Gymnasts and the AT&T American Cup.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Mascaro is a certified ringside physician for USA Boxing and provides coverage for Golden Gloves and Diamond Glove boxing events. She serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Seton Hall University and St. George’s School of Medicine, contributing to the education of future medical professionals.

Her research interests focus on the female athlete and injury prevention in adolescent athletes, and she has been actively involved in research on concussion management in gymnastics. Dr. Mascaro has contributed to the field through book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, and presentations at national and international sports medicine conferences.

Dr. Mascaro’s clinical expertise includes performing diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound-guided injections, and she specializes in the non-operative management of sports injuries. As a certified hyperbaric physician, she has also served as the Medical Director for Restorix Health. Her professional memberships include the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
