Intracept® Radiofrequency Spine Procedure at Novo Clinic

The Intracept® Procedure is a minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment for chronic vertebrogenic axial low back pain. This condition is mediated by the basivertebral nerve, which transmits pain signals from the vertebral endplates. By targeting and ablating this nerve, the procedure disrupts pain transmission while preserving normal vertebral anatomy and spinal stability.

Introduction to Intracept® Radiofrequency Spine Procedure

The Intracept® Procedure is a minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment for chronic vertebrogenic axial low back pain. This condition is mediated by the basivertebral nerve, which transmits pain signals from the vertebral endplates. By targeting and ablating this nerve, the procedure disrupts pain transmission while preserving normal vertebral anatomy and spinal stability.

Focus of our Treatment

Vertebrogenic pain is distinct from facetogenic, discogenic, or radicular pain and is commonly associated with Modic Type 1 or Type 2 endplate changes seen on MRI. These changes reflect inflammatory and degenerative processes that sensitise the basivertebral nerve and contribute to persistent axial low back pain.

The Intracept® Procedure directly addresses this pain generator by focally ablating the basivertebral nerve within the affected vertebral body. This targeted approach provides durable pain relief without the need for implants or spinal fusion, making it an evidence-based option for appropriately selected patients with chronic vertebrogenic pain.

Treatments Offered

Intracept® Basivertebral Nerve Ablation

A minimally invasive, implant-free radiofrequency procedure that ablates the basivertebral nerve to interrupt pain signalling from degenerative vertebral endplates in patients with chronic vertebrogenic low back pain.

Vertebrogenic Pain Assessment and Imaging Review

A comprehensive clinical and imaging-based evaluation to confirm vertebrogenic pain, including MRI assessment for Modic Type 1 or Type 2 endplate changes and correlation with clinical symptoms.
