Keyhole Bunion Surgery at Novo Clinic
Walk sooner, recover faster, and return to comfortable movement with minimally invasive keyhole bunion surgery performed by Dr. Kaser Nazir.
What is Keyhole Bunion Surgery?
Keyhole bunion surgery, also known as minimally invasive bunion surgery, is an advanced technique used to correct bunion deformities through very small incisions. Using specialised instruments and live X-ray guidance, the bone is precisely cut and realigned without the need for large surgical exposure.
This approach minimises disruption to surrounding tissue, resulting in less pain, reduced swelling, smaller scars, and a faster return to daily activities compared to traditional open surgery.

What Is a Bunion?
A bunion is a progressive deformity of the big toe joint, where the toe shifts out of alignment and creates a bony prominence on the side of the foot. Over time, this can lead to pain, difficulty wearing shoes, and reduced mobility.
Bunions are most commonly caused by genetics and foot structure, and typically worsen if left untreated.
What Causes Bunions?
Bunions develop due to a combination of structural and mechanical factors:
- Genetics: The most significant factor, influencing foot shape and joint stability
- Foot mechanics: Abnormal movement patterns can increase pressure on the joint
- Footwear: Tight or narrow shoes can worsen symptoms
- Pregnancy and ligament laxity: Can accelerate progression
While footwear can contribute, most bunions are progressive and unlikely to resolve without intervention.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options
In early stages, symptoms may be managed with:
- Supportive footwear
- Orthotics
- Activity modification
- Anti-inflammatory medication
These approaches can relieve discomfort but do not correct the underlying deformity.
Why Choose Keyhole Bunion Surgery?
Minimally Invasive Technique
- Small incisions (2–4 mm)
- Less soft tissue disruption
Faster Recovery
- Reduced pain and swelling
- Earlier return to activity
Improved Functional Outcomes
- Immediate weight-bearing in most cases
- Lower risk of joint stiffness
- Minimal scarring
Keyhole vs Traditional Bunion Surgery
Traditional bunion surgery involves larger incisions and greater disruption of soft tissue, which can lead to increased pain and longer recovery.
Keyhole surgery offers:
- Smaller incisions
- Less post-operative discomfort
- Faster recovery timeline
- Reduced risk of stiffness
How the Procedure Works
This is just placeholder text. Don’t be alarmed, this is just here to fill up space since your finalized copy isn’t ready yet.
Step 1: Precision Incision
A small 2mm incision is made allowing the first metatarsal to be cut.
Step 2: Bone Reposition
The head of the first metatarsal is repositioned, to partially minimise the bony prominence.
Step 3: Stabilisation
Two screws are used to fix both sections of the metatarsal in its new position.
Step 4: Toe Correction
A wedge is removed from the first proximal phalanx to reposition the toe into a straighter natural alignment. This is also fixed in place with a screw.
Step 5: Final Shaping
The protruding bone is cut away and flattened to a natural outer arc.

Recovery Timeline
Recovery After Minimally Invasive Keyhole Bunion Surgery
A live X-ray machine is utilised during the procedure to aid the cut and resetting of the bone malalignment using 3 to 4 small 1 to 3mm incisions to guide the specialised surgical instruments designed for bunion correction, that will fix the bones in the corrected position. The area heals much quicker than more traditional bunion correction. This is due to minimal scar tissue. Mr Kaser Nazir has seen excellent results with his patients who have reduced pain and quicker recovery.
First 5 Days
You can expect some pain and will be given painkillers to take as directed. You must rest completely for 2-4 days. You will be able to walk immediately for 10 minutes an hour but should elevate most of the time to promote healing.
Between 5 - 14 days
You will have a one week review with Mr Nazir in person or over the phone. Activities can be increased to 15 minutes an hour in a post-operative shoe.
14 days after surgery
We will arrange a second review where sutures will be removed. Return to trainers if swelling has subsided enough. You can mobilise for 20 minutes an hour.
Between 4 - 6 weeks after surgery
You can now walk up to 30 minutes an hour and use static weights or an exercise bike.
Between 6 - 8 weeks after surgery
Full return to normal activities and use of a range of shoes.
Between 12 - 16 weeks after surgery
In most cases, swelling will have completely subsided.
